It was the Romans who first discovered the healing properties of the waters in Wiesbaden. Twenty-six springs flow into the Hessian state capital, bestowing it with the radiance, fame and elegance reflected in the neoclassical splendour of the city's numerous monumental buildings.
Emperors and kings, tsars and princes have met here while taking the waters. International attractions include the casino, with its chequered history dating back to 1771, when it received its licence to host card games. The Kurhaus, which celebrated its one hundredth anniversary in 2007, still lures to Wiesbaden international stars as Pavarotti, Carreras, Caballé and Domingo all graced the city's open air stage.
With its theatres, museums, outstanding architecture and unusual wealth of palaces, Wiesbaden is a true centre of culture. At the same time, through its proximity to the Rhine-Main area, the city has also become the location of prominent corporations and an important trade fair and congress centre attracting numerous trade fairs and conferences every year.
Just outside the gates of the city lies one of the world's most famous wine-growing regions: the Rheingau is a fascinating blend of rural beauty and cultural diversity. Connoisseurs wax lyrical when served with one of the region's renowned top-class wines.
